Peace on Earth, Luke 2:14
Many of us are familiar with the Christmas Carol It Came Upon The Midnight Clear (Written by Edmund H. Sears 1849).
It came upon the midnight clear,
that glorious song of old,
from angels bending near the earth
to touch their harps of gold:
"Peace on the earth, good will to men,
from heaven's all-gracious King."
The world in solemn stillness lay,
to hear the angels sing.
But what does Peace on Earth, Goodwill to men actually mean? Luke 2:14 (NKJV) says it this way; "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!"
Some take this to mean peace and goodwill to all men (and women). However,
what the angels actually said was, “peace to men of good will,” or “peace among men with whom He is pleased.” (J. Vernon McGee Thru The Bible Commentary)
Friends, “There is no peace, saith the LORD, unto the wicked” (Isa. 48:22 KJV).
The men in whom God is well-pleased are those who repent of their sins and receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
We live in a wicked Satan–dominated world, and therefore there is no peace for those who have turned away from God. There is, however, peace to men of good will. Meaning if you are one who has come to Christ, trusted Him as Savior, and acknowledged Him as Lord of your life, then you can know this wonderful peace of God.
May we all, today, this advent season, and always, put our trust and hope in our gracious Heavenly Father, who loves us unconditionally and gives peace to those whom He calls His children.
